Blaenavon Steam Gala Weekend - 14th to 15th September 2024

Often accredited as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, the industrial landscape of Blaenavon was designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The preserved industrial sites of the Iron Works, Big Pit and Blaenavon Heritage Railway form the backdrop to this tour, with the latter hosting it's annual steam gala with visiting engines and a packed timetable. After spending the day at the Heritage Railway we will retire to our accommodation for the evening. Located in the heart of Blaenavon town centre you will have your own private double en-suite room with breakfast being provided the following morning. 

Our second day will be start off exploring the imposing remains of Iron Works. Opened in 1788 following an investment of £40,000 by Thomas Hill, the iron works was where the Glichrist-Thomas process was invented that revolutionised the steelmaking industry. From here we'll travel the short distance to the Big Pit National Coal Museum to take in the history and workings of the colliery before taking the lift 300ft (90m) below ground for a 50 minute tour of parts of the mine.

There will be a moderate level of exertion over uneven and often slippery terrain to reach the various locations. The weather in this part of the world can also be unpredictable. So it is recommended that you bring suitable footwear along with clothing that is appropriate to the weather conditions. The photography workshop will only be canceled if an Amber or Red weather warning is issued by the Met Office.
